Relationship Coaching for Autistic Adults

Why is it important for people with autism to have resources like Dating With Autism, if they choose to date?

Most of our society is based on the assumption that there is one form of ‘the human mind’ (neurotypical) and accordingly, many systems (education, employment, health and social services, social relationships) have been created based on being neurotypical. An accessible society needs to be created for a neurodiverse population.

Relationship coaching, such as Dating With Autism, offers two approaches:

1. Coaching provides social access to our current society to level the playing field until a more “whole system” is in place. This access includes

  • unraveling social nuances in real life situations

  • exploring current relationship resources such as online dating, social events, and meet-up groups

  • providing social skills specific to desired events (parties, travel) that might cause anxiety

2. My clients focus on their own unique inner strengths and gifts and the relationship goals they would like to accomplish on their own terms. Then we look at how they will work toward those goals given their current environment. It’s very individualized, as I’m not trying to “mold” anyone into a neurotypical world. It’s important for anyone and everyone to understand how to foster the relationships that they want. Relationship coaching isn’t new; it’s been around for decades. It’s important for people with autism to also have access to this level of support; someone to truly LISTEN, rather than a blanket prescription of what to do and how to do it.
